Highligthed

PERITO MORENO GLACIER, the only one moving forward, offers a unique show when it breaks. Many of us have heard of such an event, but, how does it happen? The glacial is an ice river coming down from the mountains along approximately 21.7 miles. Its front is 2.5 miles wide and its average height is 197 feet. This huge glacial, occasionally, is wider than the Channel, moving on top of the Magallanes Peninsula and therefore obstructing the normal water circulation from one side to the other. So the water on both sides begins to unbalance in such a way that the southern side is about 32.8 feet higher than the other side. The pressure then forms cracks on the glacial with water filtrations that break the ice and form a tunnel. Once the tunnel gets to the northern side, the water begins to level again and the final process starts. The top of the tunnel gets weaker every minute and chunks of ice get detached, almost constantly, until it ends with the major break that thousands of people have been lucky enough to witness.

FREQUENT Q&A AND SOME ADVICE FOR YOUR TRIP TO EL CALAFATE

These are the most frequently asked questions about this destination. With this information you will know the basics and will be able to take full advantage of your time. Please, don´t hesitate to contact us—we are here to offer you our best advice and make sure you get the package you need, because yours is a unique trip and it should be an unforgettable one.

1- What is the best time of the year to visit El Calafate?

You can visit any time, but because of the weather, we recommend the season from September through May, when you will have better options in hotels and tourism packages.

2- What is the difference between El Calafate and Lago Argentino?

El Calafate is the town where tourists stay and the departure point of all the excursions. It is located by the shore in Lake Argentino.

3- Is Glacial Perito Moreno located next to El Calafate?

No. That glacial is located on the southern arm of Lake Argentino and you can access from El Calafate by driving for 49.7 miles. The only possible lodging by the glacial is the Hostería Los Notros.

4- When is the glacial going to break again?

That is something very difficult to predict, although an approximate calculation is made. Since we can not be sure of the day or time of the break, we can´t plan a tour guaranteeing you will witness it.

5- Can I hire an excursion to Glacial Perito Moreno and add the trekking on the ice at the last minute?

No, you cannot. If you are not sure which of the two excursions you want to make, we recommend you don´t reserve either, although it is difficult to find a vacancy for mini-trekking on the spot. Please see our section on excursions to be sure. Although both are going to the same place, they are offered by different suppliers, and, if you change your mind, they will not refund your money on the previous day.

6- Is mini-trekking a physically demanding experience?

Because of the level of effort and difficulty, this excursion is not recommended for people who are wither older than 60 or younger tan 10; for people with a serious overweight problem; or for those with a physical handicap.

7- Should I make reservations in advance to take the boat trip to Upsala?

This excursion does not take reservations, so you can decide whether to take it or not once you get there, without the risk of being left out. The company offering this service has several boats with a capacity of 100 to 200 passengers each.
The excursion Cristina Adventure, on the other hand, requires reservations because it is taken on a small boat and there are some additional activities that must be prepared in advance.
