Location

This city is on Gulf Nuevo in the province of Chubut. It has excellent hotel infrastructure and a strategic location to enter Peninsula Valdes through the isthmus of Ameghino.

Tourist Attractions:

Península Valdés:

This unusual geographical accident is the natural habitat for numerous species. Depending on the time of the year we can see on the coast: whales, sea lions, sea elephants, birds, guanacos, dolphins, killer whales and penguins.

Pingüinera Punta Tombo:

This is the largest penguin reserve in South America and it shelters almost a million Magallanes penguins. We can learn about their lives and walk around their nests.

Highlights

FRANCA AUSTRAL WHALES:
These whales are almost 60 feet long and, between June and December each year, they come to the quiet waters of Gulf Nuevo to procreate. The calves are about 14 feet long at the time of their birth. After being hunted for years, these whales are in danger of extinction, with their population reduced in a 90%, to approximately 8,000 animals today.

FREQUENT Q&A AND SOME ADVICE FOR YOUR TRIP TO PUERTO MADRYN

These are the most frequently asked questions about this destination. With this information you will know the basics and will be able to take full advantage of your time. Please, don´t hesitate to contact us—we are here to offer you our best advice and make sure you get the package you need, because yours is a unique trip and it should be an unforgettable one.

1- What is the best time of the year to visit Peninsula Valdes?

The answer depends on what you want to see:
* Best months for whale watching are July and August
* Best months for penguins are January and February (because you can also see their chicks), but they can be seen all
the way from mid September through mid April.
* Sea Lions and sea elephants can be watched all year round.
* Best months to see most fauna would be from mid-September through mid-December. We recommend the last fortnight
in September, since some of the hotels begin their high season on October 1st.

2- What is the minimum number of nights to stay at this destination?

Taking into account that the traditional excursions (Peninsula Valdés and Punta Tombo Penguin Reserve) are 250 miles-long each, we recommend a stay of at least two nights.

3- Is there any way we can shorten the excursions Península o Punta Tombo, while staying overnight in Puerto Madryn?

The excursion to Península Valdés cannot be shortened, but we can offer an alternative for Punta Tombo that is 43 miles shorter, taking advantage of the fact that this excursion goes through Trelew, but only as long as your flight either arrives in Trelew before 9am or leaves after 5pm.

4- Supposing we don´t have time to stay more than two nights, and that our flights don´t leave us time to visit the Penguin Reserve in Punta Tombo, would we miss the penguins?

There is another penguin reserve besides Punta Tombo. It is smaller in number of birds but as impressive as the other one. It is located north of the península, so it can be visited within that circuit. It´s worth mentioning that this reserve must be accessed in a private car, but not with a regular excursion.

5- Why should we stay overnight in Puerto Madryn instead of in Trelew?

Because Puerto Madryn is located in the center of the circuit, that is, 124 miles north of Peninsula Valdez and 124 miles south of Punta Tombo. By spending the night in Trelew, the excursion to Punta Tombo would be 160 miles long and the excursion to Peninsula would be 330 miles long.
Besides, Trelew is a purely commerce city, without any night life, while Puerto Madryn has excellent beaches and also first-class infrastructure in hotels and restaurants.

6- Is whale-watching from the boats risky?

No, it´s not risky at all. The boats are controlled with strict security measures and run by experts that not only protect the people on board, but also the whales. For those people afraid of boats, the whales can be watched from El Doradillo Beach, from July through September.

7- How long is the boat trip for whale-watching?

It is approximately one hour long, depending on how close to the coast the animals are.

8- How many people get on each boat for whale-watching?

Depending on the kind of boat, anywhere from 20 to 60 people.

9- What time do traditional excursions leave and arrive back? (Peninsula and Tombo)

They leave in the morning around 8am and arrive back in Puerto Madryn late in the afternoon, around 6:30pm.
